About me

Hello, my name is Duncan Campbell, an ESL teacher in Cape Town. I have been tutoring English, History, and Biology since high school. I have been teaching English online going on for four years now, and I have experience teaching children from the ages of 4 - 17 and adults to the age of forty-five, from all around the globe. I have taught students who had not previously had any exposure to the language and started them with their phonics courses all the way through to being able to speak to a native. I have had students whom I tutored for examinations to get into their desired schools. I have also recently begun teaching business English which has been an interesting learning curve, and have had to adapt to a whole new set of needs. I have been working on improving my skills as a teacher by working alongside others and gaining input, and I'm about to start studying how to teach students with special needs. Outside of work I spend my time reading psychology and philosophy and am looking at finding the right courses for me to follow these passions, which I believe could be greatly beneficial to myself, my career, and my students. As much as I have taught I'm still constantly trying to get improve and find new challenges for myself, and I believe BWANS could provide this for me.

My education and experience

I attained a level 5 TEFL certification from The TEFL Academy, a 168-hour course along with a second 30-hour course for teaching students online. I have taught with a handful of companies which gave me the opportunity to work with and teach multiple nationalities and learn various lesson formats and teaching styles which I have adapted for my student's personal needs. Before I became an ESL teacher I worked in the hospitality industry as a bartender and supervisor, which has helped me with teaching my students how to be confident while speaking the language for different uses and levels of showmanship.
