A project I have worked on recently was an Emergency Contraceptive Health project with Health Canada, giving my opinion on how the information provided by healthcare professionals could be more widely received by youth. A typical Hong Konger, for example, despite 9 years of free English instructions, still has trouble with giving directions. It is impossible to learn something for 9 years without proficiency. The reason is that the teaching method is completely wrong. Conventional methods focus on teaching you to process languages with your eyes when we are naturally equipped with the ability to process language on aural/orally. Yet, aural/oral methods are few and far in between. Furthermore, conventional methods focus on grammar, because it is the easiest thing to teach, because you could look up grammar by yourself, if you haven't figured it out already. Sounds are much harder to perceive and teach.
