I am a Youth Researcher with the University of Toronto. I work alongside youth, advocating for those without a voice. A project I have worked on recently was an Emergency Contraceptive Health project with Health Canada, giving my opinion on how the information provided by healthcare professionals could be more widely received by youth. This included updating their information on affordable options, helping products become more inclusive in terms of gender identity, how to get the message across to youth about how important emergency contraceptives are. I am also a mother! Teaching English to a very brand new human being has been quite exciting and has definitely given me some insight into different approaches to learning. I recently moved to Barcelona, Spain and I must admit, it is quite beautiful especially in the small town areas. I plan on returning to school for a different form of research, either Astronomy, Archaeology/Anthropology or Linguistics. I consider myself a student of life, we are all constantly learning!

I am currently a month away from graduating from my BSc science degree in which I major I major in genetics and microbiology. I have developed a passion for teaching together with learning which started with my first student. She has grown in her studies and relationship with maths and is receiving distinctions in Maths, so proud of her! I have 7 students now and find so much joy in teaching and watching my students grow and developed their own ways of learning. I beleive in creative learning in which I make my lessons as visual and stimulating as possible. I adapt my lessons to the students learning methods in terms of visual, auditory or kinetic which I beleive as lead to my students not only grasping concepts in various subjects but understanding and application in their learning has improved. First and foremost, I want to start with one of my favourite quotation from Richard Henry Dana(!) (I'm not sure whether this quotation belongs to him or not, but I liked it. :) “He who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” First of all, we as teachers must improve ourselves about everything such as cultural knowledge, technology, best seller books new novels etc. We should keep up with the times and try to understand our students.
Then we should know students’ interests, needs, backgrounds and their level of English / Turkish. If we know the aforementioned things, it would be easier for us to decide what kind of materials we can use to attract their attention. Also, one of the key points is that we should motivate the students to learn. As teachers we should teach our students why they learn language/grammar/vocabulary etc. rather than just memorization. Regarding teaching methods we can use student-centered methods. We should use examples from real life so they can broaden students’ knowledge. Also using examples from real life, help students to internalize the examples. I strongly believe that we should make our students acquire the language from all aspects including reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
All in all, as a teacher we have lots of things to do. One of our most important responsibilities’ is to help students to understand that they have enough power and capacity to learn a language if they are determined enough....

When it comes to teaching a language, there are many benefits to being a native speaker. One great advantage is that you never have to constantly think about grammar or in some cases pronunciation and spelling. Although this privilege can be a game changer in terms of fluency and many other things, it also prevents a teacher from understanding and experiencing the learning path and its obstacles as a second language learner.
