I am a Youth Researcher with the University of Toronto. I work alongside youth, advocating for those without a voice. A project I have worked on recently was an Emergency Contraceptive Health project with Health Canada, giving my opinion on how the information provided by healthcare professionals could be more widely received by youth. This included updating their information on affordable options, helping products become more inclusive in terms of gender identity, how to get the message across to youth about how important emergency contraceptives are. I am also a mother! Teaching English to a very brand new human being has been quite exciting and has definitely given me some insight into different approaches to learning. I recently moved to Barcelona, Spain and I must admit, it is quite beautiful especially in the small town areas. I plan on returning to school for a different form of research, either Astronomy, Archaeology/Anthropology or Linguistics. I consider myself a student of life, we are all constantly learning!

During my academic career, I was a supplemental instruction (SI) leader and as a SI leader my responsibilities were to attend all lectures for assigned SI course, plan and facilitate two 50-minute sessions a week, hold one office hour a week, meeting with course faculty throughout the semester and meeting with SI Leader team and professional staff supervisor throughout the semester. (I'm not sure whether this quotation belongs to him or not, but I liked it. :) “He who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” First of all, we as teachers must improve ourselves about everything such as cultural knowledge, technology, best seller books new novels etc. We should keep up with the times and try to understand our students.
Then we should know students’ interests, needs, backgrounds and their level of English / Turkish. If we know the aforementioned things, it would be easier for us to decide what kind of materials we can use to attract their attention. Also, one of the key points is that we should motivate the students to learn. As teachers we should teach our students why they learn language/grammar/vocabulary etc. rather than just memorization. Regarding teaching methods we can use student-centered methods. We should use examples from real life so they can broaden students’ knowledge. Also using examples from real life, help students to internalize the examples. I strongly believe that we should make our students acquire the language from all aspects including reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
